The exhibition ‘Make Do With Now. New directions in Japanese architecture' was recently opened at the Teatro dell'Architettura Mendrisio (TAM). Yuma Shinohara, curator of the exhibition, spoke about the philosophy of the exhibited buildings to the microphones of the Telegiornale (RSI).

As explained by Yuma Shinohara, the buildings on exhibit are the result of research that stems first and foremost from the need "Japanese architects are confronted with the environmental, economic and social challenges of today's Japan, and instead of resigning themselves, they have decided to develop a new vision: Japan is becoming depopulated, and there are more and more uninhabited houses. The challenge is to give these buildings a new future".

One of the most popular concepts is the idea of making buildings adapt to their inhabitants: "One of the best examples of this vision is a house by a couple of architects from Tokyo: it is a four-storey building that is constantly evolving, an endless project as the house transforms with the habits of those who live in it".

Another characteristic of the buildings featured in the exhibition is that they are public and open to the city: "Many of these buildings have public spaces on the ground floor, for example a shop. Others use the living room as a private gallery, in both cases they are places where people from the neighbourhood can meet", Yuma Shinohara concluded.

The exhibition will be open to the public until 5th October 2025.
